Ulcerative colitis (UC) only affects the large intestine (colon) and rectal area, the lowest part of your intestines. The inflammation can result in small ulcers or sores, which become swollen and infected.[1]2

Like Crohn’s disease, UC is a condition that is unique to each person. You might have only mild flare‑ups followed by long periods of remission, whereas others may suffer symptoms all the time.3
